Love at First Flight: How I Fell in Love with Aerial Yoga
Written by Heather Parrott
I stumbled into aerial yoga purely by accident. I was talked into attending my first class while visiting a friend out of town. I’d never even heard of aerial yoga prior to that weekend, but when your best friend asks to take you on a crazy adventure, you go!
I soon learned that I had nothing to worry about. Something magical happened the first moment I got into a hammock. In an instant, I was transported back to a time before the worry and stress of deadlines, all day meetings, never ending piles of laundry, and ever growing lists of chores.
From that first swing I felt free to play. I found a strength I didn’t know I had and remembered how to laugh at myself when I fell. My inner child was released to explore new movements and shapes without judgement.
I didn’t need to be an acrobat or super flexible. Each flight could be what I needed at that moment. I saw beauty in its versatility. How practice could range from a slow relaxing flow for releasing and letting go, to deep stretches for tight muscles, to a targeted core or upper body workout for building strength, or to an intense full-body workout of flips and tricks.
Each flight could be different, full of successes or happy little accidents, but every one of them would be filled with joy.
